Dr. Tennant is a plant biotechnologist, with training in the fields of plant pathology and plant molecular biology. Her research has focused on various aspects of the Papaya ringspot virus with emphasis on the development of resistant transgenic papaya, including safety implications. She has authored over 13 peer-reviewed papers and 2 book chapters in the field of plant biotechnology.

  • Application of recombinant DNA technology and conventional methods for the detection of plant pathogens and the development and evaluation of disease resistant varieties.

  • Risk assessment of genetically modified papaya.
  • Pathology of citrus diseases.

  • Field-testing transgenic papaya developed for controlling Papaya ringspot virus in Jamaica.
  • Characterization and evaluation of papaya transgenic for the coat gene of Papaya ringspot virus from Jamaica for resistance under greenhouse conditions.
  • Evaluation of the resistance mechanism in papaya transgenic for the Papaya ringspot virus coat protein gene from Hawaii.
