What is the CARDIN database?

CARDIN database contains disaster related information gathered from the English, Spanish, French and Dutch speaking Caribbean. It is produced as part of the activities of the Caribbean Disaster Information Network which has its secretariat in the Science Library.

Search strategy
Two search methods are available. You can use a basic search or advance search form to query the database.

Basic Search
Only words in titles are searched. You may enter one or more words into the dialog box. You may choose to search on all of these words or on any word by clicking on the appropriate radio button. Then click the search button.

Advanced Search
Click on the Advanced form link on the basic search form/free form to go to that form. You can combine terms using the boolean operators and, or , and and not both within given fields and between these fields. Fields you may query include title words, author, journal etc. You may view an index to each selected field by clicking on indexing, and browsing the A-Z listing on the appropriate letter. Browse and select appropriate , then click search term

Example
A search using Disasters - Titleword; Trinidad and Tobago - Titlewords; Mather - Author, will retrieve information written by Mather with the words disasters and Trinidad and Tobago in the title.

Truncation
The truncation symbol, $, allows you to search for several words starting with the same letters.
eg. Subject descriptor search using Flood$
will search for Flood, Floods, Flooding, Floodplains etc.

Configuration The config button on both search forms allows you to select the format for displaying
Long - Bibliographic details (include author, title, source, conference, location)

The config button also gives you the option of viewing a select number of references per page. Click apply, after you have made your selection. Then click search.
