Foreign Students Orientation
This section of the course is designed for foreign students only. Please note that during the programme, two one-hour debriefing sessions will be held to facilitate this group’s cultural immersion.
May 29
- Students arrive at Norman Manley International Airport
- Students transported to Uniersity of the West Indies
- Arrival ritual, group dinner and introductions
May 30
- Commencement of Orientation
- Students will express their expectations of the program
- Academic Director will introduce cultural and social security issues that are relevant to the program
- Overview of the course content to set the context of the summer program
- After lunch, students will proceed with formalities i.e. I.D. photo taking, registering with the Health Centre etc.
May 31
- Orientation continues with “Dub Poetry and Self Defence”
- In the afternoon, students have their first Drop-Off exercise: they walk from the campus to Papine square and actively interact with the weekly Rastafari spiritual ceremony held in the park, visit the market and buy unusual provisions
June 1
- Lunch at the Ashanti Oasis restaurant
- Followed by edu-tainment by M’Bala, Hugh Pape and A’Dziko Simba, creative musicians and poets
Debriefing completes the Orientation cycle. |

Duration: 6 weeks (36 Hours)

End Date: July 12, 2008
(Travel Dates: May 29 and July 12)
Academic Value: 6 Credits
Each course consists of four (4) hours of lectures and two (2) hours of tutorials each week. Foreign students will have two additional hours each week for debriefing. Students may select two courses from the group to satisfy the contact hour requirements for six credits. The courses will be taught in parallel components over the six-week period. |
