ABOUT US

Welcome to Aston Preston Hall

This platform now serves as one of our principal media of communication with you.

As a unit within the Office of Student Services and Development, Aston Preston Hall provides a wide range of opportunities for the growth and development of our students through a multiplicity of targeted student-centred programmes: arts and culture, sports, volunteerism and outreach, leadership, environmental awareness, academic support and many others. Our students are encouraged to take advantage of these offerings to enhance and cultivate their skills and competencies that will make them competitive and distinctive students and graduates of the University.

We constantly keep abreast of the needs of our students. We are aware that our new students experience unique challenges in acclimatizing to a new environment and consequently have a need to connect, to access pertinent support and services and to function in a wholesome and stimulating learning space. We have therefore designed for them a residential version of the First Year Experience (FYE) Programme; an exciting learning experience which is guaranteed to aid in their smooth transition into the University and through their first year of studies. The FYE Programme, in conjunction with other co-curricular offerings, is designed to complement their academic pursuits, creating for them the holistic UWI, Mona experience.

The Second-Year Transitional Experience Programme (STEP) focuses on civic engagement through volunteerism and outreach; while the Third Year Experience (TYE) Programme features professional development for employment and/or readiness for graduate studies locally and abroad. Among other important values, we:

  •  Encourage critical thinking
  •  Create healthy learning environments
  •  Enhance the creative potential of our students
  •  Foster an ethic of care with a commitment to social justice
  •  Emphasize honesty, integrity and truth
  •  Promote leadership and teamwork

In hall, we have an expert team of Resident Advisors, Administrative and Facilities Staff, and Student Leaders who are available to provide you with any assistance necessary for you to make the best of your university experience.

Have a wonderful and successful academic year!

The Aston Preston Hall

The Aston Preston Hall was conceived out of a desperate need to provide more student accommodation on the Mona Campus. On March 20, 1990, after a long period of negotiation for funding, financing was approved by the European Development Fund (EDF) under the Lome Regional Programme as part of the Student Accommodation for Caribbean Regional Educational Institutions.

As an architectural dream, Aston Preston Hall was seen as the creation of a new concept in student housing, which would not only be residential in character, but also provide an institutional setting that would be conducive to learning and to the development of regional student integration. After funding was approved by the EDF, a design competition was launched to select architects to conceptualize and follow through with this dream. Entries were assessed by a panel and two architectural companies were selected: Marvin Goodman & Associates of Jamaica and Norman & Dawbarn of the United Kingdom (UK).

The Hall Song

Written by Franklin Halliburton & Jenelle Babb.

Musical Arrangement by Marlon Simms.

Preston Hall we sing our praises true,

And give our hearts, our best, our all to you.

Guardian of our pride, our faithfulness abide,

Always now and in the future more.

Preston hall we pledge loyalty,

Serving with unfailing duty.

Relentless as a shark, with excellence our mark,

We will rise to even greater heights.

Sing we now for you oh Preston Hall,

That your name forever will stand tall.

With heads lifted high,

We turn your hopes towards the sky.

Sing we now for you oh Preston Hall,

That your name forever will stand tall.

With heads lifted high,

We turn your hopes towards the sky.

We salute you A.Z. Preston Hall! We salute you A.Z. Preston Hall!
