The Marcus Garvey Movement is pleased
to invite you to the 16th Annual All African Students’ Conference
(AASC), which will be held at The University of The West Indies,
Mona, Kingston, Jamaica from May 20 – 22, 2003. The theme
adapted for the 16th AASC is “The Bicentenary of the Haitian
Revolution: Prospects, Possibilities and Perspectives”. The
aim of which is to commemorate the bicentenary of the Haitian Revolution,
and to facilitate meaningful dialogue on a phenomenon of great importance
at this juncture in our development as African peoples.
The AASC is an annual international conference that brings together
individuals from across the world to discuss issues pertinent to
peoples of African descent (Africa and its Diaspora).
Efforts are being made to put together panels on the following
topics:
- Historical Background and Significance of the Haitian Revolution
- African Culture in the Haitian Revolution
- The Haitian Revolution: Comparative Perspectives
- Pan Africanism
- Reparations and Debt
- Identity, Gender, Ethnicity and Colour in Haiti (Haitian Revolution)
- Post Revolution Haiti

Speaking Caribbean
- Haiti in the Contemporary Caribbean: Security, Migration and
Refugees
- Caribbean cultural repercussions of the revolution
- Haiti: Neo colonialism and neo imperialism revisited
- Leadership: From Mackandal to Aristide
NB. The general/vague nature of the design of the sub themes is
to encourage a wide interdisciplinary discussion on the major issues.
Note also that the areas outlined above are not mutually exclusive
of each other and are only to provide you with a guide/focus for
your abstract/papers. The final compendium of abstracts/papers will
be based on what is submitted and not necessarily on the format
of the Call for Papers.
