Professor Ian Boxill 2018-2023

Professor Ian Boxill has been an outstanding administrator and leader at The UWI for over 30 years. He joined The University of the West Indies, Mona as a Lecturer in 1992. In 2001, he was promoted to the position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work and then Head of the Department in 2003 until 2007. In 2006, he was elevated to the title of Professor of Comparative Sociology, and held the GraceKennedy S. Carlton Alexander Chair in Management Studies, serving as Director of the Centre for Tourism and Policy Research (CTPR) in the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2010 to 2018. Professor Boxill served as Dean in the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2016 until his appointment as Deputy Principal of the Mona Campus in 2018.

Professor Boxill also served as Dean in the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2016 until his appointment as Deputy Principal of the Mona Campus in 2018.

Professor Boxill has gained international acclaim and respect for his pioneering work in the areas of comparative development, social inequality and regional integration. A productive researcher, he has also written extensively on topics related to Caribbean economic and political integration, Asian-Pacific societies, indigenous cultures and societies, Caribbean social structure, race and ethnic relations and economics and culture in the Caribbean. This research output has enabled him to make a considerable contribution to the development of academic research, and has facilitated links between the UWI and other universities in North America, Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Professor Boxill has authored/edited 9 books, over 70 academic articles and has taught at universities in New Zealand, Mexico, the USA, and intermittently at the St Augustine and Cave Hill campuses at The UWI. He has consulted with or worked for organizations such as: the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), the Department for International Development (DFID), CARICOM, World Wide Fund for Nature, UNESCO, UNCTAD, The World Bank, The Caribbean Tourism Organization, among others. He founded and edited the IDEAZ journal and CaribXplorer, a science magazine. He also served as Associate Editor (Anglophone Caribbean) for the social sciences and humanities journal, Revista Mexicana del Caribe.
