This should document gains, changes in perspective, insight into personal growth, reflection on practice.
Portfolio: 15%
This should consist of samples of materials to support vernacular language literacy.
Lesson Plan: 15%
This consists of a vernacular language lesson plan for the teaching of either some aspect of language and literacy, or a content subject.
Research Project: 60%
This is a take home project which would involve implementing, documenting and researching an educational activity which uses bilingualism involving a Caribbean vernacular language, as an educational tool. [8 weeks].
Objectives
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Express themselves competently in writing and speech in academic discourse in the Caribbean vernacular language with which they are familiar. In the area of writing, this would involve the use of a standardised writing system such as the Cassidy system for Jamaican, or the stardard writing system for Dominican and St. Lucian French Creole. Such language use should avoid loanwords from English, and be natural and idiomatic,
- Demonstrate via journal entries and discussions, an awareness of the linguistic insecurities created by the diglossic relationship which exists between Caribbean vernacular languages and English,
- Demonstrate an ability to design and deliver vernacular language lessons, by way of model lesson plans and delivery involving real children where possible,
- Show an awareness of the issues involving vernacular language literacy and bilingual education in Creole and Caribbean vernacular language situations around the world, through class discussions, the design of their research project and the literature review contained within the project write-up.
- Design and implement a research project relevant to the course, analyse the data collected, a present an insightful project report.
