L14B: Introduction to Language Structure
Semester II 2004/5
Level : One, Credits : Three

Supplementary
Course Description:
1) A knowledge of the basic units or building blocks which, according to linguists, make up human languages.

2) An understanding of the rules and the processes which speakers use to put these units or building blocks together to create utterances which are understandable to listeners.

3) An appreciation of the discussion amongst linguists about what the units in 1) are, and what the rules and processes, as in 2) might be.

4) The ability to use 1), 2) and 3) in the analysis of language data.

Students Responsibilities:
(i) Students registered in this course are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled lecture and seminar sessions.

(ii) Students are expected to do at least 3 hours per week of out-of-class preparation. However, depending on your schedule or your level of preparedness for the course, it might be in your best interest to spend more private time to fully grasp the concepts.

(iii) Students are required to turn off all cell-phones during lectures and tutorials. If a cell-phone rings, the owner will be expected to leave for the duration of the class.

(iv) Students are expected to conduct themselves professionally during lectures and seminars. Students will be asked to leave the session if they continuously disrupt the flow of the session.

(v) Students need to note the dates of tests and final exams. Be punctual and be prepared.

Evaluation:


1) Two (2) in-course tests at 20% each… … 40%
2) Final written examination (2 hours) … … 60%
