    The smallest independent country in South America, Suriname escapes
    most Hurricanes that have affected the Caribbean region. The bulk of the hazards confronting the country are man-made, including the impacts of the mining and forestry industry which has caused severe environmental damage.

    Area 163,270 km2
    Terrain Mostly rolling hills, narrow coastal plain with swamps
    Population 438,144 (2005 est.)

    Government Strategies


    As of 2005, there are no National Disaster Coordinators in place, and no plans have been prepared. Following the Dutch model, the fire service is expected to be assigned the task of disaster management.
