    Profile
The islands of Saint Kitts and the smaller Nevis suffered a tourism decline in the late-1990s as a result of two
particularly fierce hurricane seasons. Hurricanes, tropical storms, or tropical depressions are the most common hazard facing these islands. There is no record of volcanic eruption, though there is minimal activity from Nevis Peak. Jamestown, the former capital of Nevis, was destroyed by an earthquake and subsequent Tsunami in 1690. Although operating as one country, Nevis has considerable autonomy within this federation and is enable to enact laws pertaining to disaster management that are both separate and complimentary to the federal National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA).
