    Profile
    Much of the island of Martinique lies in the shadow of Mount Pelee, a dormant volcano that, in 1902, erupted and completely destroyed the city of St. Pierre on the island's west coast,
    killing over 26,000 people. Along with volcanic activity, the island has averaged one major disaster every five years, ranging from hurricanes to flooding.

    Terrain Mountainous with indented coastline; dormant volcano
    Population 432,900 (2005 est.)
