Profile
Much of the island of Martinique lies in the shadow
of Mount Pelee, a dormant volcano that, in 1902, erupted
and completely destroyed the city of St. Pierre on the
island's west coast,
killing over 26,000 people. Along with volcanic activity, the island has averaged
one major disaster every five years, ranging from hurricanes
to flooding.
