Transfer applicants to Medical
Sciences from the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences of
the UWI may be considered on completion of the Preliminary
and/or Introductory years of the programme. All such applicants
must complete and submit a Transfer Form (only) by the second
Friday in January in the year of application.
Persons holding UWI first degree from the Faculty of Pure
and Applied Sciences with a minimum of lower second -class
honours may be considered for entry.
Persons holding degrees from Universities other than the
UWI will also be considered provided that:
The University which granted the degree is recognized as
competitive.
Credits have been obtained in Biology / Zoology and
Chemistry
A minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or its
equivalent has been obtained.
NON-ACADEMIC CONSIDERATIONS: All candidates are required to
submit a short (300 words or less) autobiographic sketch outlining
the reasons for their career choice.
Candidates must produce evidence of their involvement in
relevant extra-curricular / co-curricular activities in socially
oriented projects and voluntary community service in the year
prior to application.
Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences The Bachelor of Basic
Medical Sciences offers Majors in the following disciplines:
Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology.
AGE REQUIREMENT: Applicant must be at least 18 years old
at the time of admission.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
A. i) Gce O’Levels (Grades A to C)/CXC(CSEC) General
Proficiency Level (Grades I & II) pre 1998; Grades I to
III from 1998) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics.
ii) GCE A'Levels/Cape (2 Unites per subject): a minimum
of two subjects chosen from Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Physics/Mathematics.
OR
UWI Preliminary Pure and Applied Science Course (N1): Chemistry,
Life Sciences, Physics, Mathematics.
B. Equivalent qualifications (as determined form transcripts)
to those above.
C. A limited number of mature students (= 21 years) with
the GCE O'Level/CXC(CSEC) requirements stated above (i) and
relevant work experience in a research/medical laboratory.
NB: Students registered in the Bachelor of Medical Sciences
Programme cannot transfer to the MBBS programme. However on
completion can apply to the MBBS programme where credits may
be granted.
Bachelor Science Post RN (B.Sc. Post RN)
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Subjects at CXC General/GCE O'Level
Compulsory - English Language, Chemistry
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Professional Training
Bachelor of Science in Generic Nursing The programme is offered
through the Brown's Town Community College and is offered
over a four year period.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Five CXC(CSEC) General proficiency (Grades I-III) subjects
or GCE O'Level inclusive of English Language, Biology/Integrated
Science, Mathematics/Accounts and two other approved
subjects.
Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is an allied health profession, concerned
with health promotion, prevention of physical disabilities
and the rehabilitation of persons disabled by pain, disease
or injury.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Subjects at CXC(CSEC) General/GCE
O'Level
Five (5) CXC(CSEC) General Proficiency (Grades (I-III) or
GCE subjects.
Compulsory - English Language, Mathematics.
Any two 2-unit CAPE, or two GCE Advanced Level, Passes
from the following list of subjects; Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Biology.
Applicants to the Physical Therapy programme are further require
to:
Be at 18 years old at the time of admission
Complete sixty (60) voluntary hours in a Physical Therapy
department at the time of admission to the Programme.
At least thirty (30) of these hours must be spent in
an acute general hospital. Candidates must make their
own arrangements for doing voluntary hours.
